Kochi: Two more Malayalis are remanded in the ED case of the Chinese instant loan scam. The Kochi PMLA court has also granted the Enforcement Directorate’s request to remand Kozhikode native Syed Mohammed and Fort Kochi native Varghese for four days.

The ED’s preliminary conclusion is that a fraud of Rs 1600 crore took place. In January, the ED had arrested 4 people from Tamil Nadu in connection with the case. Syed Mohammed and Varghese were the ones who obtained documents from ordinary people and prepared bank accounts for the fraud without their knowledge. Rekha Gupta took oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi. Lt. Governor VK Saxena administered the oath at the swearing-in ceremony held at Ramlila Maidan. Parvesh Verma was also sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister. Ashish Sood, Pankaj Singh, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Kapil Mishra and Ravindra Inderj Singh also took oath along with Rekha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda, Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states, and prominent NDA leaders attended the oath-taking ceremony.

The new Chief Minister was decided in a parliamentary board meeting chaired by the Prime Minister yesterday. In a meeting of the legislature party held at the party’s state headquarters in the presence of central observers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Om Prakash Dhankhar, Parvesh Verma proposed Rekha Gupta’s name for the post of Chief Minister. The proposal was passed unanimously. Ravi Shankar Prasad formally announced that Rekha Gupta had been elected as the leader. Rekha Gupta thanked everyone. Although several names were considered for the post of Chief Minister, three factors – women, OBCs and representatives of the middle class – supported Rekha Gupta.

Rekha is the fourth woman to become the Chief Minister of Delhi. Sushma Swaraj of the BJP, Sheila Dikshit of the Congress and Atishi of the Aam Aadmi Party are the previous women to have ruled the national capital. The ED has seized assets worth Rs 10.11 crore of the film director and producer S Shankar. The ED has frozen director Shankar’s assets in connection with the movie ‘Enthiran’. The total value of the seized assets is Rs 10.11 crore.

The ED’s move stems from a complaint filed against Shankar in a court in Egmore, Chennai, on May 19, 2011, by Aroor Tamil Nadu, the author of the Jiguba story. A case has been registered against Shankar on the grounds that the storyline of Shankar’s Tamil film Enthiran was copied from Jiguba, thereby violating the Copyright Act, 1957 and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Enthiran, starring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai in the lead roles, was released in 2010. The film grossed Rs 290 crore worldwide. The Federal Investigation Agency had found during its investigation that Shankar had earned a substantial amount of Rs 11.5 crore from the film. Also, a report by the Film and Television Institute of India had pointed out similarities between the story Jiguba and the film Enthiran. Based on the evidence, it was found that S Shankar had violated Section 63 of the Copyright Act, 1957, which is now an offence under the PMLA, the ED said.

The central government is once again set to ban more than a hundred apps on national security grounds. National media reported that the central government has ordered the removal of 119 mobile apps related to China and Hong Kong from the Google Play Store. Most of the banned apps are video and voice chat platforms. The center took action under Section 69A of the IT Act. In addition to Chinese apps, some apps from Singapore, the US, the UK and Australia have also been banned.

In 2020, the central government had banned several apps, including the most popular social media app in the country, TikTok, and the file sharing app Share It. On June 20, 2020, the Indian government banned about 100 Chinese apps.

Section 69A of the IT Act empowers the central government to regulate online content for national security and public order. Reports also indicate that only 15 apps have been removed from the Google Play Store so far despite the ban. Chill Chat, an app developed by the Singapore-based Mangostar team, is the most prominent of the banned apps. The app has over one million downloads and a 4.1-star rating on the Google Play Store. A Chill Chat spokesperson said that they had received a warning from Google regarding the blocking. Among those banned are the Chinese app ChangApp and Honeycomb, developed by an Australian company.
