Kabul airport

Kabul: Crowds near Kabul airport in Afghanistan. The British Ministry of Defense said seven people had been killed in the stampede. All seven dead were Afghan nationals. A spokesman for the UK Ministry of Defense said it was “saddened” by the incident.

Last week, Maj. Gen. William Taylor announced that 2,500 Americans had been evacuated from Kabul. He said the United States was trying to evacuate people as soon as possible. A total of 17,000 people were evacuated. Of these, 2,500 are U.S. citizens. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the exact number of Americans in Afghanistan was not yet known.

Earlier, more countries had stepped in to provide temporary asylum to Afghans. The UAE said it was ready to provide shelter to 5,000 people within 10 days. Refugees will be flown to the UAE on US flights from Kabul.
