Beijing: China is ready to build the world’s largest dam. China is building a dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet. The $137 billion project was recently approved. China aims to generate 300 billion kilowatts of electricity per year through this massive project.
The Brahmaputra flowing through the Himalayas is known as ‘Yerlang Tsangbo River’ in Tibet. Four to six giant tunnels of 20 km length will have to be dug in the ‘Namcha Barwa’ hills for power generation. Chinese state media reported that the project would surpass China’s current largest dam, the Three Gorges.
There is a huge earthquake risk in the area where the dam is going to be constructed. Therefore, there is a big challenge in front of China in relation to the construction of the dam. Yan Xiong, former chairman of the China Power Construction Corporation, claimed that the project could generate $3 billion in annual revenue for Tibet.
