Washington: US doctors have created history by performing brain surgery on a unborn baby. This type of surgery is being performed for the first time in the world. The operation was to repair the damage to the blood vessels in the brain of the fetus.
The blood vessels that carry blood from the baby’s brain to the heart did not develop properly. Due to this, there is excessive pressure of blood in the veins and heart which leads to other health problems. This condition is known as Venus of Gallon malformation.
Diagnosing brain injuries and heart defects after the baby is born is a big challenge. Children often receive treatment too late. Of these, 50-60 percent of babies will become ill immediately. This can even lead to death.
It was during the ultrasound examination that the damage to the blood vessels in the brain was discovered. Babies born with this disorder have heart and brain problems. That is why when the pregnancy was 34 weeks, the hospital authorities were ready to perform surgery inside the womb itself. The surgery was performed at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital.
