Vijay Secures Majority in Tamil Nadu: VCK and Left Parties to Support TVK Government

The political stalemate in Tamil Nadu has finally come to a dramatic conclusion. After four days of intense negotiations and administrative deadlock, actor-turned-politician Vijay is set to become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Sources confirm that he has successfully secured the necessary numbers to cross the majority threshold in the State Assembly.

Vijay, the chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is expected to meet Governor RV Arlekar at Raj Bhavan around 6:00 PM today to formally stake his claim to form the government.

The Numbers Game

In last month’s historic Assembly elections, the TVK made a stunning debut by winning 108 out of 234 seats, effectively ending the 62-year-old dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. However, the party fell short of the 118-seat majority mark.

The path to power became complicated when Governor Arlekar insisted on physical letters of support from 118 MLAs before inviting Vijay to form the cabinet. With Vijay having to resign from one of the two seats he won (Trichy East or Perambur), the TVK’s effective strength stood at 107, leaving a gap of 11 seats.

New Alliances Emerge

The breakthrough came this afternoon as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Left parties—CPI(M) and CPI—decided to extend their support to the TVK.

  • The Support Breakdown: Together, these three parties hold 6 seats (2 each).
  • The Congress Factor: Earlier this week, the Congress (5 seats) broke its long-standing alliance with the DMK to back Vijay, a move that sent shockwaves through the political landscape.

With the combined support of the Congress, VCK, and the Left, Vijay now commands the allegiance of 118 MLAs, reaching the magic number required for a stable government.

End of an Era

The formation of a TVK-led government marks a tectonic shift in Tamil Nadu politics. For over six decades, the state has been a battleground exclusively for the two Dravidian giants. By stitching together a coalition of national and Dalit-centered parties, Vijay has not only secured the Chief Minister’s chair but has also redefined the state’s political alliances.

Celebrations have already erupted outside Vijay’s Panaiyur and Neelankarai residences, with thousands of supporters gathered to witness what they call the dawn of a “New Tamil Nadu.”

Quick Highlights:

  • Majority Reached: TVK (107) + Congress (5) + VCK (2) + Left (4) = 118.
  • Governor Meet: Scheduled for 6:00 PM this evening.
  • Historic Debut: Vijay to be the first debutant party leader to become CM in decades.
