In a rare and soul-stirring encounter, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal recently met Unni Menon, the man who served as the real-life inspiration for one of Indian cinema’s most iconic characters: Mannarathodi Jayakrishnan from the cult classic Thoovanathumbikal.

Directed by the legendary Padmarajan, Thoovanathumbikal (1987) remains a timeless exploration of love, rain, and the dualities of man. For decades, fans wondered about the origins of the charismatic Jayakrishnan. This meeting, captured in the video “Kathayathra,” bridges the gap between reel and real.

The Man Behind the Legend: Unni Menon

Unni Menon was a close friend of Padmarajan. The director meticulously observed Unni’s mannerisms, his sudden bursts of temper, his deep devotion to his family, and his “celebration of the moment” to craft Jayakrishnan [03:02].

  • Dual Identities: Just like in the film, Unni Menon lived a “double life.” In his village, Peruvallur, he was a disciplined son and farmer, while in Thrissur, he was the life of the party, surrounded by friends and high-spirited adventures [15:30].
  • The “Celebration” Philosophy: Unni describes his life as a constant celebration, a trait Mohanlal captured effortlessly. “Living in the present” is a philosophy Unni still holds dear, now finding solace in the teachings of Osho and Ramana Maharshi [21:08].

A Mirror on Screen

When Unni Menon first watched Thoovanathumbikal in Dubai, he was stunned. “I was shocked… this is my life I am seeing on screen,” he recalls [13:52]. He noted that even the smallest details—like the way Mohanlal folds his mundu or the scene where he carries a sack of rice—were identical to his own habits [15:51].

Mohanlal, during the meeting, expressed his own sense of wonder. He admitted that while he knew the character was based on someone, meeting the “original” Jayakrishnan felt like an “extacy moment,” akin to the joy of a thousand bottles of wine [25:00].

The Mystery of Clara and the Magic of Rain

One of the most debated topics in Malayalam cinema is the identity of Clara, the ethereal woman Jayakrishnan loves.

  • The Real Clara: When Mohanlal playfully asked, “Who is Clara?”, Unni hinted that such a person likely existed in that specific era and setup, though he chose to keep the mystery alive [27:32].
  • The Connection to Rain: The film is famous for its romanticization of rain. Unni shared that he and Padmarajan often walked through the rain together in Thrissur, sometimes even without an umbrella, simply to soak in the moment [27:50].

A Living Monument

Unni Menon views Thoovanathumbikal as a living monument built for him by Padmarajan while he was still alive [19:20]. Today, at 87, he still receives gifts and visits from fans who cannot reach Mohanlal but see the spirit of Jayakrishnan in him [23:58].

The meeting concluded with a poignant reflection by Mohanlal: “Jayakrishnan must have been a bird… after 39 years, he flew out of that nest and merged into me for a few moments before returning to the man he belongs to” [30:12].
