LPG Price Hike in India: Domestic Cylinders Up by Rs 60, Commercial by Rs 115 Amid Middle East Crisis

New Delhi: In a move that will impact household budgets and dining-out costs across the country, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have announced a significant hike in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder prices. Effective Saturday, March 7, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder has been increased by Rs 60, while the 19 kg commercial cylinder sees a steeper hike of Rs 115.

This marks the first increase in domestic cooking gas prices in exactly a year, with the last revision occurring in early 2025.

Revised LPG Cylinder Prices in Major Cities

Following the price revision, consumers will have to shell out more for their monthly cooking gas requirements. Here is a quick breakdown of the new prices across major metropolitan cities:

14.2 kg Domestic Cylinder Prices:

  • New Delhi: Rs 913 (Up from Rs 853)
  • Mumbai: Rs 912.50
  • Kolkata: Rs 939
  • Chennai: Rs 928.50
  • Kerala: Rs 922.00

19 kg Commercial Cylinder Prices:

  • New Delhi: Rs 1,883
  • Mumbai: Rs 1,835
  • Kolkata: Rs 1,990
  • Chennai: Rs 2,043.50

(Note: Final prices may vary slightly depending on state-specific Value Added Tax or VAT).

Why Are LPG Prices Increasing?

The sudden spike in domestic and commercial gas prices is a direct fallout of the escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The ongoing conflict involving Iran and the US-Israel alliance has severely disrupted the global crude oil supply chain. This international volatility has pushed up global energy prices, leaving Indian oil companies with no choice but to pass a portion of the burden onto consumers.

Relief for PM Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) Beneficiaries

While the price hike affects general consumers, the government has ensured a safety net for the economically weaker sections. Beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) will remain insulated from this shock. They will continue to receive a targeted subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder for up to 12 cylinders a year, providing crucial financial relief.

Government Assures No Fuel Shortage

Amidst the price hike and global tensions, the Union Government has urged citizens not to panic. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri clarified that the geopolitical crisis will not disrupt India’s fuel supply chain.

The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has also issued advisories warning the public against believing fake news circulating on social media regarding fuel shortages. The corporation confirmed that the country has ample strategic fuel reserves and requested consumers to avoid panic-buying or rushing to fuel stations.
