Kerala Weather Update: IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert As Southwest Monsoon Advances; Twin Cyclonic Circulations Form

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a widespread rainfall warning for Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep over the next five days. According to the latest IMD weather bulletin, conditions are highly favorable for the further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into more parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal within the next 2 to 3 days.

The intensification of the weather system is being driven by active cyclonic circulations over both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, triggering heavy downpours across the region.

Southwest Monsoon Set to Progress Rapidly

Weather scientists report that the Southwest Monsoon is drawing closer, with favorable conditions developing for its entry into:

  • More parts of the Southwest and Southeast Arabian Sea
  • The Lakshadweep region
  • Major sections of the Bay of Bengal (including Southwest, Central-East, Central-West, Southeast, and parts of Northeast Bay of Bengal)

Twin Cyclonic Circulations Intensify Rain System

The IMD has identified two distinct weather systems accelerating the pre-monsoon and monsoon surge:

  1. Arabian Sea System: A cyclonic circulation persisting over the Southeast Arabian Sea and its adjoining areas.
  2. Bay of Bengal System: Another active cyclonic circulation hovering over the Central-East and Southeast Bay of Bengal.

Kerala Rain Warning: Key Dates and Forecast

The weather department has outlined a detailed forecast from May 28 to June 1, urging residents to stay vigilant.

  • Heavy Rainfall Alert (May 28, 29, and June 1): Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted across various districts of Kerala and the union territory of Mahe.
  • Squally Winds and Thunderstorms: Widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected across Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep.
  • Wind Speed: Gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely during this period.

Safety Advisory: Due to the prediction of strong winds and lightning strikes, the public is advised to take necessary precautions, especially those living in coastal areas and hilly terrains. Avoid standing under loose structures or trees during thunderstorms.
