Kochi: High Court orders to examine the mental status and social background of the accused in the Attingal double murder and Jisha murder cases. The background of Nino Mathew, the suspect in the Attingal double murder case, and Amirul Islam, the suspect in the Jisha murder case, is being examined. The action is part of the decision regarding the commutation of the death penalty of the accused.
In 2014, Nino Mathew killed his girlfriend’s mother-in-law and her 3-year-old baby. In 2016, Ernakulam law student Jisha was raped and murdered. It will be examined whether the social background of the two led to the crime. Project 39 team consisting of experts from Delhi National Law University has to submit the report in a sealed envelope. The mental status of the accused should also be examined by two mental health experts. At present, there is a proposal to submit a Jail DGP report including the behavior in the Jail. This is the first time in the history of the High Court that the Division Bench has ordered to examine the social background of the accused sentenced to death.
Based on these reports submitted in a sealed envelope, the court will decide on the commutation of the death sentence.
