CHENNAI: In a major boost to the Tamil film industry, the Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has officially permitted all movie theatres across the state to screen five shows daily. This new rule applies to the first seven days from the release date of any new Tamil film.
According to the official notification, movie theatres are also allowed to run five daily shows on local festival days, public holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Previously, theatres in Tamil Nadu were restricted to operating four shows everyday. While an additional special show (making it five shows a day) was permitted on festival days and holidays, theater owners were required to obtain separate special licenses and permissions from the local authorities each time. Under the new directive issued by Chief Minister Vijay, the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules have been amended, completely removing the need to seek separate permissions or licensing approvals for running these five daily shows.
This decision comes shortly after key representatives and stakeholders from the Tamil film industry met with CM Vijay to present several demands, with the request for five daily screenings being their primary appeal. The amendment is expected to significantly maximize first-week box office collections and curb heavy rush during major new releases.
