The Delhi High Court on Monday summoned Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in a defamation case filed by BJP leader Rajiv Chandrasekhar. The next hearing in the case has been adjourned to April 28.
Former Union Minister Chandrasekhar alleged that Tharoor had made defamatory remarks during a TV programme ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. He demanded an apology and a compensation of Rs 10 crore for tarnishing his reputation.
The Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police registered a case on April 15, but the details were revealed only today. The police said that the case was registered against Tharoor based on a complaint filed by BJP leader JR Padmakumar, who alleged that Tharoor had made false propaganda against Chandrasekhar during a television programme.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) has also taken action and warned Congress candidate Tharoor and asked him to “not raise unsubstantiated allegations in future that violate the Code of Conduct (MCC)”. The warning was issued in response to a complaint filed by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) alleging that Tharoor had made false statements to defame its candidate and Union Minister Rajiv Chandrasekhar.
The main contest in the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat was between Shashi Tharoor and Rajiv Chandrasekhar.
