Fact Check: Has MVD Kerala Banned Autos From Transporting School Children?

0

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has officially cleared the air regarding rumors circulating on social media about school auto services. The department confirmed that reports claiming a total ban on carrying school children in autorickshaws are entirely fake and baseless.

The clarification came through an official public notice posted on the MVD Kerala official Facebook page following widespread anxiety among parents and auto-rickshaw drivers across the state.

The Rumor vs. The Reality

  • The Viral Claim: Certain media outlets and social media platforms reported that the Motor Vehicles Department issued a strict directive banning parents from sending their children to school in autorickshaws.
  • The Actual Fact: The MVD has clarified that no such directive or ban has been issued. Autorickshaws are fully permitted to continue their services for school students, provided they strictly adhere to existing traffic and safety guidelines.

MVD Kerala’s Official Statement on School Autos

In its official statement, the Motor Vehicles Department urged the public not to fall victim to misinformation. The department stated:

“Reports claiming that the Motor Vehicles Department has directed not to send children to school in autorickshaws are completely baseless. The department has not issued any such instructions.

There are absolutely no restrictions for autorickshaws to safely operate services, carrying the permitted number of children in accordance with the existing laws.”

Safety Guidelines Remain Mandatory

While there is no ban, the MVD emphasized that law enforcement will continue to ensure student safety. Autorickshaws must operate within legal boundaries:

  1. No Overloading: Autos must only carry the legally permitted number of children. Overloading beyond the authorized capacity will strictly invite penalties.
  2. Safety Protocols: Drivers must ensure safe seating and follow all standard school-transportation safety norms mandated by the state.

The authorities have requested the public to rely only on official channels for such updates and to stop spreading unverified news that causes unnecessary panic during the school reopening season.
