More than 75 more medical colleges in the country

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today approved the setting up of 75 government medical colleges in the country by 2021-2022. The new Medical Colleges will be opened during the 15th Finance Commission at Rs 24,375 crore.

The new Medical Colleges will be aligned with the existing District and Referral Hospitals as part of Phase 3 of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme. They will be set up in areas where there are no medical colleges and 200-bed district hospitals. Priority will be given to districts with 300-bed district hospitals. Explaining the Cabinet decisions, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said the aim was to improve the quality of hospitals at the district level, increase government-level medical care, and provide quality medical specialists and affordable medical education.

The minister said that in the first phase, 58 medical colleges sanctioned in the first phase, 24 medical colleges in the second phase and 75 sanctioned seats in the country would get 15,700 MBBS seats in the country. There are 39 medical colleges in the first phase are opened in the country.
