NEW DELHI: In an unprecedented turn of events in the national capital, Delhi Police dragged away and detained Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi following a high-voltage protest outside the Prime Minister’s official residence. The dramatic crackdown came after Congress leaders and workers staged a sit-in demonstration lasting over three hours.
Police forcibly removed and arrested several Congress Members of Parliament who were protesting alongside Rahul Gandhi. Scuffles with police personnel left several MPs injured, including women parliamentarians. The mass police action was initiated as an increasing number of party workers and supporters began gathering at the site.
Union Minister’s Pacification Attempt Fails
Prior to the police action, Union Minister Jitendra Singh reached the protest venue in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. He held talks with Rahul Gandhi for nearly half an hour; however, the discussion yielded no results as Congress leaders remained steadfast in their demands. The police force moved in shortly after the minister departed.
Protests Triggered by Police Lathi Charge
The Congress party’s demonstration was sparked by a recent Delhi Police lathi charge on CJP protesters. The Congress leadership is demanding the immediate resignation of the Prime Minister and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, holding them responsible for the clashes during the CJP demonstration.
The high-profile protest saw participation from top party leadership, including Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi, K.C. Venugopal, Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan, and Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
