
São Paulo: The death toll in the joint police–military operation against drug cartels in Rio de Janeiro has risen to 132. The raid was launched targeting the powerful Comando Vermelho (Red Command) drug gang.
Reports say young men were shot in the head, stabbed, burned, and brutally beaten. Bodies have been found piled up in several areas. Around 2,500 soldiers took part in the raid. The large-scale violence has triggered widespread protests across Brazil, with human rights groups condemning the operation as a massacre.
