Murder as part of Gujarat Genocide; All 22 accused were acquitted

Ahmedabad: 22 accused in the Gujarat Genocide murders were acquitted due to lack of evidence. The court has acquitted the accused who killed 17 people, including two children, due to lack of evidence. The relevant incident took place on February 28, 2002, at Delol village in Gujarat. The accused were accused of not only killing seventeen people but also trying to burn the dead bodies to destroy the evidence.

The accused were acquitted by the Additional Sessions Court at Haloltown in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat. The police initially registered an FIR for attempted murder and participation in violence and riots in Delol village. Two years later, in a new investigation, 22 suspects were arrested for their involvement in the riots. But the police could not find the bodies of the victims. The accused were helped by the fact that the prosecution could not prove that the charred bones found on the river bank belonged to the victims. Eight of the 22 accused died during the trial.
