Landslide disaster in Kalamassery; Four construction workers died

Kochi: Four killed in a landslide in Kalamassery. The deceased were residents of West Bengal. All those at risk are guest workers.
Five of them were rescued. The accident happened a short while ago in Electronic City. The search is on for those trapped in the soil. Those rescued from the ground have been admitted to Kalamassery Medical College Hospital. While digging for construction work, the landslide caused the body of the workers to fall into the pit.

The rescue operation is being carried out very diligently considering the possibility of another landslide. The first attempt was to use JCB to remove the trapped people by removing the soil.

Department of Public Education with action to reduce the workload of higher secondary principals

Thiruvananthapuram: The public education department has taken steps to reduce the workload of higher secondary school principals. The action was taken on the instructions of Public Education and Labor Minister V Sivankutty.

The teaching work of principals of government-aided higher secondary schools in the state has been fixed at eight periods per week. If there are junior teachers who have less than the required period in those schools, they will be given up to 14 periods to teach the 8 periods after the subject to be taught by the principal.

In cases where such teachers are not available, the previous order appointing teachers on a daily basis will be implemented immediately.

India reinstates e-tourist visas

New Delhi: The Home Ministry has decided to reinstate e-tourist visas issued to citizens of 156 countries, which have been suspended since March 2020 due to the covid epidemic. Permission was also granted to apply for a new e-tourist visa.

 The decision comes as the covid situation in the country improves. The move comes in the wake of the situation in the country and the need for further easing of visa and travel restrictions.

The ministry has reinstated 10-year tourist visas for the US and Japanese nationals, the issuance of new visas for citizens of both countries, and the valid regular (paper) long-term.

Permission to use foreign vehicles in India

New Delhi: The Central Government has issued a draft notification for legal permission to enter and use non-transport (personal) vehicles registered in foreign countries in India.  The Union Ministry of Surface Transport and Highways has issued a draft notification on International Non-Public (Private) Vehicle Rules 2022.  The Central Government aims to legalize the entry and use of private vehicles registered in other countries in India.
 Valid registration certificate, driving license, international driving permit, whatever it may be, insurance policy, pollution control certificate, these documents must be kept.  If it is in a language other than English, the English translation approved by the authorities who issued it must be kept with the original documents.
 Motorized vehicles registered in a foreign country will not be allowed to carry local passengers and products.  The notification also states that motor vehicles registered in any country other than India are required to comply with the rules and regulations under Section 118 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.

E-cars to make the film festival eco-friendly

Thiruvananthapuram: This time KSEB’s electronic cars to make the International Film Festival eco-friendly. The e-cars, which are in service 24 hours a day, were handed over to the Electricity Board Film Academy to be used for the official needs of the fair.
 KSEB-CMD Dr. B Ashok and Chalachithra Academy Chairman Ranjith flagged off the event. Ranjith, chairman of the academy, said such initiatives are an investment in a secure future.

Covid: Center convenes high-level meeting

New Delhi: The Central Government has convened a high-level meeting in the wake of a spate of covid cases in Europe and East Asian countries. Union Health Minister Mansouk Mandavya has directed officials to be extra vigilant in the new situation and strengthen monitoring.
 The minister also directed that the genetic stratification of the covid virus be intensified at a high-level meeting attended by experts, including health officials. The meeting also discussed the vaccination situation in the country, the decision of the Central Government to resume international flights from March 27 and the genetic sequencing to identify new variants.
 Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, Biotechnology Department Secretary Dr. Rajesh Khokale, Justice Commission member VK Paul, ICMR chief Dr. Dr. Balram Bhargava, Director, AIIMS; Randeep Guleria and others attended the meeting.

Strong earthquake shakes Japan  Tsunami Warning

Tokyo: Strong earthquake shakes eastern Japan.  An earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale shook the capital, Tokyo.  The Japan Meteorological Agency said in a statement that the epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor, however; no tsunami alert was issued.  The epicenter was reported 60 kilometers south of Fukushima prefecture.  No damage or injuries were reported.  But there were reports of power outages in Tokyo.

Tohoku Electric Power, a regional energy company, said 156,000 homes in the Northeast were without electricity.  Meanwhile, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told the media that the government was gathering information on the situation.  He said the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was being inspected because of the tsunami alert.

Incident of couple being arrested with drugs; The main accused has been arrested

Kannur: Nizam (35), the main accused in the case of arresting a couple with MDMA and brown sugar worth Rs 1 crore from the parcel office of a travel agency, has been arrested. The accused was apprehended while traveling in a car from Hosangadi in the border area of ​​Kasargod district around 12.30 pm on Tuesday. He was produced before the Kannur Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court and remanded. During interrogation, SPR Elango said he had confessed to supplying drugs, including MDMA, to the Afzal-Balkis couple, who had been arrested earlier.
 Balkis and Afzal, a couple previously arrested in a drug case, will be remanded in custody for questioning. The arrested Nizam is a close relative of Balkis. Another accused in the case, Janice, is absconding and the search for him has intensified. A check of Nizam’s bank account and mobile phone revealed that he had made the transaction.
 Using WhatsApp messages and a Google map, Balkis specified the places where Nizam could be taken to drug dealers. Balkis was paid a commission and incentive for each transaction via Google Pay. The goods were delivered only after receiving the price of the drug from the customers through Google Pay. The SP said that it was clear that the Nizam was involved in five of the seven drug cases seized from Kannur district at Edakkad and Kannur city police stations.
 On March 7, Balkis and Afzal were arrested for possession of two kilograms of MDMA and opium. Later, the police raided a drug store in Kannur and found lakhs worth of deadly drugs. Another accused and Balkis’ close relative, Kannur City Marakkar, is absconding. The arrested Nizam is the son of the remanded Balkin’s uncle.

Amritsar: Aam Aadmi Party leader Bhagwant Mann was today sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Khatkar Kalan village, the hometown of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party National Convener Arvind Kejriwal was present on the occasion. Before attending the ceremony, Bhagwant Mann resigned from the Lok Sabha on Monday.
