Massive fire breaks out in Karachi multi-storey shopping mall;  11 people burned to death

Karachi:  Massive fire breaks out in multi-storey shopping mall in Karachi, Pakisthan.  Reports are that 11 people were burnt to death.  A fire broke out in the morning at RJ Shopping Mall located on Rashid Minhas Road in Karachi.

 About 50 people were rescued but more people are still trapped inside the building.  The injured have been admitted to the hospital.  The cause of the fire is unclear.

Journalist Soumya Viswanathan murder case;  4 accused got life imprisonment and 5th accused got three years imprisonment

 New Delhi: The court awarded life imprisonment to 4 accused in the murder case of Malayalam media worker Soumya Viswanathan.  The fifth accused was sentenced to three years imprisonment and Rs 5 lakh.  The Saket Sessions Court gave its verdict after a 15-year long legal battle.

 On October 18, the court ruled that the accused in the case, Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljit Malik, Ajay Kumar and Ajay Sethi are guilty.  After this, the sentence was pronounced.  The accused must pay Rs 1,20,000 each to Soumya’s family.

 Four accused have been charged with murder and one under the Makoka Act.  The prosecution had argued in the court that he committed murder during the robbery.

 On September 30, 2008, Soumya Viswanathan was shot dead while traveling home in Vasantkunj in the morning.  The group of attackers stopped the car and shot at Nelson Mandela Road near the house.  The police found that the murder was committed following the robbery attempt.

Mumbai airport bomb threat: One more arrested

Thiruvananthapuram: After the arrest of a young man who threatened to blow up the Mumbai airport with a bomb, the anti-terrorist squad of the Mumbai Police arrested another person from Thiruvananthapuram in the incident. Febin (23), a native of Kilimanoor Chuta, was taken into custody early on Saturday.

Febin’s house and surroundings were under surveillance by anti-terrorist forces since Friday.  The young man was taken to Mumbai.  In the case, Amin, a native of Poonthura, was arrested from Thiruvananthapuram by the anti-terrorist squad on Friday evening.  The hard disk of the computer from which the e-mail was sent was seized.

 On Thursday, Amin sent a message threatening to demolish the airport if the 8.5 crore is not paid.  The Mumbai Sahar Police registered an FIR and handed over the case to the Anti-Terrorism Squad.  The ATS will also investigate whether there is a terrorist link behind the threat.

 The airport authorities received the message at 11 am on Thursday.  Following this, the ATS has started an investigation.  The investigation team and the Kerala Police are not ready to release more information.

Four students killed in stampede at CUSAT Kochi 20 others were injured

KOCHI: Four students were killed and 20 others were injured in a stampede at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred during a music concert organized as part of the university’s tech fest. The stampede broke out when a large number of students rushed towards the stage to get a better view of the performance.

The injured students were rushed to nearby hospitals. The university authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Eyewitness

Eyewitnesses said that the stampede started when a group of students fell down near the stage. Others who were behind them also fell down, creating a domino effect.

“It was a horrific scene. People were screaming and crying. There was chaos all around,” said an eyewitness.

Police investigation

The police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. They are also looking into the possibility of negligence on the part of the organizers.

Kerala University Union election results: KSU wins big

The Kerala University Students’ Union (KSU) won a landslide victory in the recently held union elections. The KSU won the union in Mar Ivanios College and Nedumangadu Government College.

The KSU’s victory in Mar Ivanios College is particularly significant, as it is the first time the party has won the union in 24 years. Melvin Thomas Tharakan was elected chairman.

The KSU also won the union in Nedumangadu Government College, which was also a long-time stronghold of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI).

In other results, the KSU won the union in the following colleges:

  • Pangode Mannananni College
  • Perinthalmanna Iqbal College
  • Nagaroor Sree Sankara College
  • Thiruvananthapuram Government Law College

The SFI won the union in the following colleges:

UPI Payment Limits: How Much Can You Transfer in a Day?

PhonePe

  • The payment limit for PhonePe is also ₹1 lakh per day.
  • The app does not have a limit on the number of transactions in a day.

Paytm

  • The Paytm payment app also allows payments of up to ₹1 lakh per day.
  • Other than that, Paytm has no restrictions on UPI payments.

Amazon Pay

  • Amazon Pay allows payments of up to ₹1 lakh through UPI.
  • The app also allows 20 transactions in a day. However, new users can only make transactions of up to ₹5,000 within the first 24 hours.

Encounter at Rajouri;  Four Soldiers Martyred

Rajouri: Two Captain rank officers and two soldiers were killed in an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district.  The clash continues.  The terrorists fired during a joint search in Bajimal area by the army and Jammu and Kashmir police on Wednesday.

 The army says that two terrorists have been surrounded in the forest area and they are trying to nab them.  Last week, 8 terrorists were killed in encounters in Uri, Kulgam and Budhal Rajouri.

DGCA again fined Air India

New Delhi: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has fined Air India for the second time for non-compliance with compensation rules.  The action came after the regulator found that Air India was not complying with the provisions of the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) during an inspection of airlines at Delhi, Kochi and Bangalore airports.

 The show-cause notice was issued on November 3 for failing to provide hotel accommodation to passengers inconvenienced by flight delays, not training ground staff as per requirements and not compensating international business class passengers who traveled in bad seats.  But the DGCA statement clarified that Air India’s reply to the notice was not satisfactory and a penalty of Rs 10 lakh was imposed for non-compliance with CAR conditions.

Cabinet approves BPCL bio-waste plant;  Financial assistance to those involved in Brahmapuram fire accident

Thalassery: Cabinet approves BPCL’s Compressed Biogas Plant as a permanent solution to Kochi city’s organic waste problem.  The decision was taken in the cabinet meeting held in Thalassery during the Navakerala Sadas.

 10 acres should be handed over to BPCL for this purpose from the land owned by Kochi Corporation.  At least 150 metric tons of waste per day should be installed on this land.  Compressed biogas produced from the plant will be used in BPCL.  The construction cost is around 150 crores.  This amount will be fully borne by BPCL.  It is estimated that the project can be implemented within 15 months.

 The organic fertilizer produced in the plant will be made available to the farmers.  Waste water generated as part of waste treatment is treated and released only as clean water.  After the treatment, the remaining waste water will be taken over by Clean Company and treated.

 In the Cabinet meeting, it was also decided to grant an incentive of Rs 1,000 per day to 387 Civil Defense volunteers involved in fire rescue operations in the Brahmapuram waste treatment plant fire.

Carried out pro-separatist activities;  Four government employees dismissed in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: Four government employees found to be involved in pro-separatist activities in Jammu and Kashmir have been dismissed from service.  It includes a doctor and a police constable.  It was found that they helped terrorist organizations while in government service

 Associate Professor of Medicine, Srinagar Government Medical College Dr.  Nisar ul Hasan, Jammu and Kashmir police constable Abdul Majeed Bhat, Farooq Ahmed Mir, a teacher in the education department, and Ghulam Muhammad, a laboratory bearer in the higher education department, have been dismissed from service.  In the last three years, more than 50 employees in the Union Territory have been sacked for allegedly aiding Pakistani terror outfits while in service.
