Maharashtra Schools to End Classes Before 12 PM Due to Heatwave

Mumbai: Due to the intense heatwave, the Maharashtra Education Department has directed that schools must conclude classes before 12 PM. This directive applies to both government and private educational institutions.

Revised School Timings:

 Primary classes: 7:00 AM – 11:15 AM

 Secondary classes: 7:45 AM – 11:45 AM

The decision comes after heatwave warnings were issued in Mumbai and various parts of the state. The government has taken this step to ensure students’ safety and well-being.

Additional Guidelines for Schools:

 * Ensure classroom fans are functioning properly

 * Provide cooling drinks like sherbet, ORS, and buttermilk to students

Authorities have urged schools to prioritize student health and take precautions against extreme temperatures.

Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Alert; Yellow Alert in 8 Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for isolated heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across several districts in Kerala. Strong winds with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 km/h are also expected on Saturday.

On Sunday (April 6), thunderstorms accompanied by rain and winds at speeds of 30 to 40 km/h are likely in isolated areas. Due to the possibility of heavy rainfall, a yellow alert has been declared in multiple districts until Sunday.

 Thursday (April 3): Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad

 Friday (April 4): Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur

 Saturday (April 5): Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad

 Sunday (April 6): Malappuram, Wayanad

The forecast predicts isolated heavy rainfall across these regions.

Lightning and Thunderstorm Safety Advisory

The IMD has warned that isolated thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds (40-50 km/h) are likely to continue in Kerala until Saturday (April 5). Residents are advised to take necessary precautions against lightning and stormy weather.

Land fraud case; Arrest warrant issued for Elamaram Karim

An arrest warrant has been issued for CPI(M) leader and former Industries Minister Elamaram Karim in the land fraud case. The arrest warrant was issued after he failed to appear in court in a case related to Mukkam Crusher and Granite in Mukkam Karassery. The arrest warrant was issued by the Thamarassery court. The court had asked Elamaram Karim to appear four times. The complaint is that Elamaram Karim’s relative Noushad committed fraud in the name of running a crusher and Elamaram Karim acted as an intermediary to get the land registered in Noushad’s name

Mother and children commit suicide in Ettumanoor; accused Nobi granted bail with conditions

Kottayam Nobi Lucas granted bail in the case of mother and children committing suicide in Ettumanoor. The Kottayam District Sessions Court granted bail to Nobi Lucas with conditions. Nobi is being released from jail after 28 days.

The court had heard detailed arguments in the past few days. However, the defense argued that the police had not been able to find any evidence to prove Nobi’s role in the case. Shiny’s father Kuriakose had also filed a petition against Nobi’s bail application.

The police had informed the court that bail should not be granted. The police FIR states that the reason for Shiny and her children committing suicide was pressure from her husband and family.

On February 28, Shiny and her children Alina and Ivana jumped in front of a train near Ettumanoor railway station. The three died when the Kottayam-Nilambur Road Express hit them. The incident took place near the Parolical railway gate before Ettumanoor station.

Vismaya case: Conviction should be quashed; Supreme Court notice on accused Kiran’s petition

The Supreme Court has issued a notice on the petition filed by accused Kiran Kumar seeking a stay on the sentence in the case of Vismaya, who committed suicide following dowry harassment in Kollam. The court has issued a notice to the state government. The petition is against the trial court’s verdict that sentenced Vismaya to 10 years in prison in the case of dowry harassment. Kiran approached the Supreme Court after his petition filed in the High Court seeking quashing of the sentence was not disposed of. Kiran’s argument is that there is no evidence against his in the case. Advocate Deepak Prakash appeared in court for Kiran.

Kiran had approached the High Court against the trial court’s verdict that sentenced her to 10 years in prison. But even after two years, no decision has been made.

Vismaya hanged herself in her husband’s house in June 2021 due to domestic violence. Relatives had alleged that Vismaya committed suicide due to her husband’s torture. Vismaya was given in marriage to Kiran Kumar with 100 paise of gold, one-quarter acre of land and a car worth Rs 10 lakh.

Supreme Court Orders Compensation for Houses Demolished in Prayagraj

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has strongly criticized the Uttar Pradesh government and the Prayagraj Development Authority over the demolition of houses in Prayagraj. The court ordered that the owners of the demolished houses be paid a compensation of ₹10 lakh each within six weeks. The court referred to the action as extremely inhumane and unjust.

The verdict was delivered by a bench consisting of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Ujjwal Bhuyan. The court termed the incident as shocking and described it as a gross violation of human rights.

The demolitions were carried out under the mistaken belief that the houses were located on land formerly occupied by gangster and politician Atiq Ahmed, who was killed in 2023. The petitioners, Advocate Sulficar Haider and Professor Ali Ahmad, approached the court seeking justice for the affected families.

Commercial Cooking Gas Cylinder Price Reduced in the Country

The price of commercial cooking gas cylinders has been reduced in the country. The price of the 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders has been cut by ₹41. The revised price will come into effect from April 1.

According to the updated prices, the cost of commercial cylinders in different cities is as follows: ₹1,762 in Delhi, ₹1,921.50 in Chennai, and ₹1,767 in Kochi.

However, there has been no change in the price of domestic LPG cylinders.

This is the third consecutive time that the price of commercial LPG cylinders has been revised. Earlier, on March 1, the price of commercial LPG cylinders was increased by ₹6. This increase followed a reduction of ₹7 in February.

Oil companies revise LPG prices based on changes in the global crude oil market and other economic factors.

UPI, Digital Services to be Disrupted: SBI

New Delhi: The State Bank of India (SBI) announced on Tuesday (April 1) that UPI and digital services will be unavailable between 1 PM and 4 PM due to annual account reconciliation. The information was shared via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

However, SBI clarified that UPI Lite and ATM services will remain available. The bank also apologized for the inconvenience caused to its customers during this time.

The term “heavy rain” refers to rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. As part of the warning, yellow alerts have been issued for several districts.

German Woman Allegedly Raped in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: A German woman has reportedly been raped by a car driver in the Pahadi Sharif area of Hyderabad. The 22-year-old woman was attacked on Monday evening. The police have registered a case and have initiated an investigation. The woman has been admitted to a hospital for a medical examination.

The woman had arrived in India with three German friends to visit her friend. On Monday evening, while sightseeing around the city, the group was offered a lift by a car driver. There were other passengers in the car at that time, but they all got off at various stops. Once they reached Mamidipally, the woman’s friend also got out of the car.

At around 7:30 PM, the woman continued her journey alone to take some photos of the area. Afterward, she called her friend to inform him that she had been attacked.
