Parliament Monsoon Session to Begin on July 21

The upcoming Monsoon Session of the Indian Parliament is scheduled to begin on July 21 and will continue until August 12. This was confirmed by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who also mentioned that both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will convene daily at 11 a.m., with no changes to the usual schedule.

Meanwhile, the opposition has demanded a special session to discuss various national security concerns, including tensions with Pakistan and the recent Operation Sindoor. Opposition leaders have highlighted the loss of civilian lives during shelling from Pakistan and questioned the government’s response to ceasefire violations. They have also raised concerns about potential foreign involvement, particularly from the United States, in India-Pakistan diplomatic affairs.

A letter signed by 15 opposition parties, including Congress, the Left, and the Trinamool Congress, was submitted to the government demanding the special session. Minister Rijiju also stated that impeachment proceedings against Justice Yashwant Varma are expected to begin during the upcoming session.

COVID-19 Cases See Fresh Surge in India

COVID-19 cases in India are once again showing an upward trend. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported that the total number of active cases in the country has risen to 4,302. Within the last 24 hours, 276 new infections were confirmed. Alongside this, seven deaths related to the virus were also reported during the same period.

Four of these deaths occurred in Maharashtra, while Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Gujarat each reported one fatality. This brings the total number of deaths caused by COVID-19 in the country since January to 44. Kerala remains the worst-affected state, currently reporting 1,373 active cases. However, there has been a slight decrease in daily cases compared to previous days. Other states showing significant numbers include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, West Bengal, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh.

YouTuber Arrested for Allegedly Spying for Pakistan

A popular YouTuber from Punjab, Jasbir Singh, has been arrested for allegedly leaking sensitive information to Pakistan. Singh, who runs the YouTube channel “Jaanmahal Video” with over one million subscribers, was taken into custody by the Punjab Police’s Special Operations Cell. Authorities revealed that he had been in contact with Shakir, also known as Jatt Randhawa, an officer linked to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). According to Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, Shakir is suspected to be part of a spy network that supports terrorist activities.

Investigators discovered several Pakistani phone numbers on Jasbir’s mobile phone, and records show he had visited Pakistan three times. He had also participated in Pakistan’s National Day celebrations at the Pakistani Embassy in New Delhi. This arrest comes shortly after another YouTuber, Jyoti Malhotra from Haryana, was detained on May 15 in a similar case. Police have found that Jasbir and Jyoti had close ties, and following her arrest, Jasbir attempted to cover his tracks by deleting Pakistani contacts and reducing communication with them. His mobile phone has now been sent for forensic analysis.

Kochi: Dr. V.P. Gangadharan, a prominent cancer specialist, has received a death threat. A letter from Mumbai, sent under the name ‘Citizen for Justice,’ demands ₹8.25 lakh as blood money, threatening to harm the doctor and his family if the amount is not paid. The letter alleges that a girl died due to Dr. Gangadharan’s medical negligence and that her mother subsequently took her own life. It further claims that the girl’s father approached the group seeking justice.

Following the receipt of the letter via post on May 17, Dr. Gangadharan lodged a complaint with the Maradu police. The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. The letter demands the payment of ₹8.25 lakh in Bitcoin through a provided QR code, threatening the lives of the doctor and his family if the demand is not met.

Kerala Health Department Responds to Rise in COVID-19 Cases

As the number of COVID-19 cases shows a slight upward trend, the Kerala Health Department has issued a directive advising hospitals to test individuals who present symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, and breathing difficulties. This precautionary measure aims to control the spread of the virus, especially in light of increasing cases being reported in other states.

In Maharashtra, for example, 59 new cases have recently been identified, with 20 of those emerging in Mumbai alone. Man Arrested in Punjab for Spying for Pakistan

Punjab: A man named Gagandeep Singh was arrested in Tarn Taran, Punjab, for allegedly spying for Pakistan. According to police, he had been working for Pakistan’s spy agency ISI for the past five years.

He leaked strategic information about Indian military movements during Operation Sindhoor, which he passed on to Pakistani intelligence operatives. A mobile phone containing crucial evidence was recovered. Investigations revealed that Gagandeep had communicated more than 20 times with ISI agents, for which he also received money. This was confirmed by Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav.

RBI Imposes Heavy Penalties on Financial Institutions for Regulatory Violations

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revealed in its latest annual report that it imposed penalties totaling 54.78 crore on 353 financial institutions during the last financial year. These fines were a result of various violations, including lapses in cybersecurity measures, failure to adhere to KYC (Know Your Customer) norms, and inaccuracies in credit information reporting.

The institutions penalized span across a wide range, including commercial banks, cooperative banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), housing finance firms, and asset reconstruction companies. Among them, cooperative banks faced the most scrutiny, with 264 of them being fined a total of 15.63 crore. NBFCs and ARCs together paid over 7 crore in penalties, while 13 housing finance firms were fined 83 lakh.

Public sector banks were also not spared, with eight of them paying more than 11 crore in penalties. Private sector banks contributed nearly 15 crore, and even foreign banks faced action, highlighting the RBI’s strong regulatory stance across the board.

IB Officer’s Death: Accused Sukant in Police Custody

Thiruvananthapuram: Sukant Suresh, the accused in the IB officer’s death case, has been remanded to police custody until Thursday. He is to be taken to Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam districts for further investigation.

Additionally, his sexual health will be evaluated. Sukant had been absconding after the High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. He later surrendered and was brought to Thiruvananthapuram, where the court had earlier remanded him for 14 days.

“Won’t Apologize”: Kamal Haasan Says; Thug Life Temporarily Banned in Karnataka

Bengaluru: Kamal Haasan told the Karnataka High Court that he would not apologize in connection with the recent language controversy. He stated that his remarks were not made with malicious intent, and therefore, he sees no reason to apologize. He also noted that the release of his film Thug Life in Karnataka has been temporarily halted.

Haasan had filed a petition against the ban imposed on the Tamil film Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam. While considering this plea, the High Court strongly criticized Haasan for his remarks and asked on what grounds such statements were made. The court advised that he express regret to end the issue, but Haasan declined to do so. The court postponed the hearing to a later date.
