Palakkad: The Palakkad Additional Sessions Court has awarded the death penalty to 61-year-old Chenthamara, the convict in the shocking Nenmara Pothundi double murder case. Observing that the case falls under the ‘rarest of rare’ category, Judge Kenneth George pronounced the verdict.
In addition to the death sentence, the court imposed a fine of ₹20 lakh. The court further directed that this fine amount must be handed over to the children of Sudhakaran, one of the victims.
The brutal double murder took place on January 27, 2025, when the convict hacked Sudhakaran (55) and his mother Lakshmi (75), residents of Boyan Nagar, to death in front of their house. Chenthamara had previously been sentenced to double life imprisonment for the 2019 murder of Sudhakaran’s wife, Sajitha. He committed this secondary double murder while out on parole during the trial phase of the earlier case.
The court fully accepted the prosecution’s argument that the convict shows no remorse and poses a significant threat to society. Throughout the trial, the accused displayed absolute defiance, even shouting in court that he was “not Gandhiji” and telling the court to go ahead and hang him. The convict was found guilty under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder and wrongful restraint.
