Kolkata: Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in at least four places in West Bengal on Friday. Tens of thousands have been relocated to West Bardhaman, West Medinipur, Hooghly, and Howrah districts. 15 people died. Tens of thousands of hectares of farmland and thousands of homes are underwater.
The damage was caused by the opening of the Damodar Valley Corporation dam and several related reservoirs on the Jharkhand-Bengal border. The town of Khanakul in Hooghly district is completely underwater. The natives in droves sought refuge on top of tall buildings. Troops rescued the 100-year-old woman in a helicopter.
