Kollam: In the tragic incident where a student died due to electrocution at Thevalakkara Boys’ School, Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty confirmed lapses from both the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and the school management. The KSEB has been directed to provide ₹5 lakh as compensation to the bereaved family.
The minister stated that no proper permission was taken for constructing the shed, and the electrical line did not maintain the mandatory safe distance from the ground or the structure. KSEB had earlier requested the school to approve the conversion of overhead lines to insulated cables, but the school delayed the decision, citing the need to consult the upcoming management committee.
Education Minister V. Sivankutty has directed the Director of Public Instruction to conduct an urgent inquiry. District education officials in Kollam have also been asked to ensure safety measures are in place.
