Mixed-use of the Covid vaccine dose may do more harm than good: WHO

Soumya Swaminathan

New Delhi: The World Health Organization (WHO)’s chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan has said that changing the second dose of the Covid vaccine is a dangerous trend. Soumya Swaminathan said that when the first dose of the vaccine is not available during the second dose, people are more likely to accept the vaccine.

She said it was not possible to say at this time how effective the combination of vaccines from different manufacturers would be as there was no clear study or information available about the covid vaccine. They also warned that the use of mixed vaccines could sometimes do more harm than good.

Soumya Swaminathan added that the problem would be exacerbated if everyone started deciding which vaccine to take and when to take it according to their liking and convenience during the second dose.
