Beijing: China is on high alert as the covid world grips. Researchers say a new type of coronavirus, NeoCov, has been found in South Africa. The news was released by the Russian news agency Sputnik, citing researchers in Wuhan.
According to the report, NeoCov is not a new virus. It has been linked to the MERS Cov virus, which was reported in the Middle East in 2012 and 2015. It can cause coronavirus infection in humans, similar to SARSCOV-2.
It is currently found in a group of bats in South Africa. It is found only in bats. However, new studies have shown that NeoCov and the closely related PDF-2180 – Cov can infect humans.
Researchers at the University of Wuhan and the Chinese Academy of Sciences say that just one mutation is needed to penetrate human cells. It may affect human cells differently than the current coronavirus. Therefore, they say, neither the antibodies in the human body nor the current vaccine can protect against NeoCov, the report added.
