KOZHIKODE: Renowned film and theatre actress Savithri Sreedharan, who won hearts with her memorable performances across stage and screen, passed away on Wednesday. She was 83. She breathed her last at her residence in Mankave, Kozhikode, following age-related ailments.
Savithri Sreedharan began her artistic journey on the theatre stage at the age of 16. Over a career spanning more than four decades, she became a prominent figure in Kozhikode’s vibrant cultural scene. She gained widespread recognition in the theatre world through her lead roles in several iconic plays written by acclaimed playwright K. T. Muhammed, and was an integral part of major drama troupes including Kalinga, Chiranthana, and Stage India.
Though she stepped into cinema with M. T. Vasudevan Nair’s Kadavu in 1991, it was her powerful comeback in the 2018 blockbuster ‘Sudani from Nigeria’ that brought her widespread popularity among film lovers. Her portrayal of ‘Jameela Umma’ earned critical acclaim, winning her the Kerala State Film Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Special Mention at the 66th National Film Awards.
Following her breakout success, she appeared in notable Malayalam films such as Virus, Dakini, Paappan, Me Hoom Moosa, and Christy.
Her passing marks a profound loss to Malayalam theatre, cinema, and the cultural landscape of Kerala.
