CHENNAI: Acclaimed Tamil film director, actor, and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj passed away this morning at a private hospital in Chennai following a cardiac arrest. He was 73. Known as a master storyteller, his demise marks the end of an era in South Indian cinema, where he redefined screenwriting and family-centric comedies.

Born on January 7, 1953, as Krishnasamy Bhagyaraj in Vellankovil near Gobichettipalayam in the Erode district, he began his cinematic journey as an assistant director to the legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja. In 1979, he made his independent directorial debut with the critically acclaimed film Suvarillatha Chithirangal.

Bhagyaraj quickly established himself as a versatile powerhouse in the industry, achieving massive success as a director, actor, story writer, screenwriter, and dialogue writer. He was celebrated for his unique ability to seamlessly weave humor, intricate family relationships, and socially relevant themes into his narratives. His scripts were famously characterized by unexpected plot twists and incredibly natural, witty dialogues that resonated deeply with the masses.
