Kochi: Veteran actress Swetha Menon has broken her silence following her high-profile resignation from the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). In an explosive Instagram post, the actress revealed that she chose to step down because she “refused to be a puppet to anyone,” while leveling serious allegations against vested interests within the film body.
Defying Smear Campaigns and Winning the AMMA Election
In her detailed statement, Swetha disclosed that she was targeted with intense character assassination and fabricated allegations even before the AMMA elections took place. She specifically named individuals like ‘Crime’ Nandakumar and Martin Menachery as being part of the smear campaign.
Despite the negative propaganda, she secured a victory through the overwhelming support of the majority of AMMA members. “I can assure them that I did everything to the best of my ability,” she stated, thanking those who stood by her.
Blocked Investigations and Call for a Forensic Audit
The most damning part of her statement points toward a cover-up regarding internal mismanagement. Swetha alleged that certain “vested interests” actively blocked the current committee from investigating the wrongdoings of previous committee members.
To ensure complete accountability and transparency, she has openly demanded a strict financial probe:
“The accounts of the past two terms, including ours, should be thoroughly reviewed. A forensic audit should be commissioned to ensure complete transparency and accountability.”
“I am Neither a Sanghi Nor a Commie”
Swetha also firmly shut down ongoing political labeling. Clarifying her political neutrality, she explicitly stated, “I am neither a Sanghi nor a Commie.”
She pointed out that despite receiving numerous invitations, she never attended a single function organized by either the BJP-led Central Government or the LDF-led State Government—both before and after she became AMMA President. She noted that she chose to stay away even “when everyone else was chasing these invitations.”
Resignation Out of Self-Respect, Not Weakness
According to the actress, the toxic environment, continuous character assassination, and baseless personal abuse ultimately forced her to step down. However, she made it clear that her departure shouldn’t be mistaken for surrender.
“That decision was not out of weakness. It was out of self-respect,” she emphasized.
Signs indicate that the controversy is far from over. Swetha signed off her post with a fiery warning to her detractors: “To be continued… Picture abhi baaki hai, mere dost.” (The movie isn’t over yet, my friend).
