KOLKATA: Marking a historic shift in the political landscape of Eastern India, Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the first-ever Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday. The grand ceremony took place at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground, which was transformed into a “sea of saffron” by thousands of jubilant supporters.
Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Adhikari in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states.
1. A Decisive Mandate
The BJP secured a landslide victory in the 294-member Assembly, clinching 207 seats and effectively ending the 15-year tenure of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC). This victory follows a high-octane campaign where the BJP positioned itself as the alternative for “Ashol Poriborton” (Real Change).
The new administration is expected to hold its first cabinet meeting shortly to outline its immediate priorities for the state.
