The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported the quake at 8.0, later revising it to 8.8.

Tsunami Impact and Warnings

Tsunami waves of up to four meters (13 feet) struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, causing evacuations, building damage, and some injuries. In Japan, a 30 cm (1 foot) tsunami wave hit the eastern coast of Hokkaido, with the Japan Meteorological Agency issuing warnings for coastal areas. Authorities in Japan urged residents to evacuate to higher ground or seek shelter on the fourth floor or above of sturdy buildings.

In Hawaii, the Honolulu Department of Emergency Management warned of “destructive tsunami waves” expected to arrive around 7:00 PM local time (6:00 AM UK time). Mayor Rick Blangiardi emphasized the severity of the situation, urging residents to avoid beaches and move to higher ground. California, Oregon, and Washington are under a tsunami advisory, with Oregon expecting waves of one to two feet (30 to 60 cm) starting around 11:40 PM local time (7:40 AM UK time). The Oregon Department of Emergency Management warned of dangerous currents and advised people to stay away from beaches, harbors, and marinas.

The Philippines and parts of Alaska also received tsunami warnings, while New Zealand’s Civil Defence issued a national advisory, noting the risk of strong and unpredictable coastal currents without immediate evacuation needs.

Regional Impact

In Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, the earthquake caused significant disruption in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Reports indicate power outages, mobile service failures, and physical damage, including toppled cabinets, broken mirrors, and shaking buildings. Several injuries were reported, including cases of people hurt while evacuating and one incident at the new airport terminal. Governor Vladimir Solodov described the quake as the strongest in decades, with aftershocks of up to 7.5 magnitude expected for at least a month.

In Japan, nuclear power plants along the Pacific coast, including Fukushima Daiichi, have halted operations as a precaution. Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings reported that 4,000 workers are sheltering at higher elevations within the Fukushima complex while remotely monitoring the facility. The release of treated radioactive wastewater from the plant has been temporarily suspended.

Safety Advisories

Authorities across affected regions are urging residents to follow safety protocols. In Hawaii, officials stressed the importance of avoiding coastal areas and seeking higher ground. Similar warnings have been issued in Japan, the Philippines, and Alaska, with emphasis on staying away from water until advisories are lifted.
