Bharat Gopi; The last word of Excellence

Bharat Gopi, popular Malayalam actor bagged lots of awards in the Malayalam film industry. Sometimes he has known as ‘Kodiyettam Gopi' for his powerful performance in Kodiyettam movie. Beside of Indian Government of France also honor him as the Best Performer in 1985.

In addition to Bharat Awards, he has won four State Awards for Best Actor.

He won the Film fare Award for 3 years. Gopi, who won the Film Critics Award four times, has been awarded twice at the Gulf Malayalee Association Awards.

Gopi also was a film director and producer. His performance in 'Yamamannam' won in 1991 for National Film Award for Best Film on Social Issues. Gopi's 'Acting Experience' won the national award for best book on film. He has received other regional, national and international honors, including the Padmashree award in 1991.

Gopi Born on 8 November 1936, he was the youngest of four children of Velayudhan Pillai in Althiramood Kochu Veevi in Chirayinkeezhu, Thiruvananthapuram District.

Gopi's acting career began in 1956 when he was studying a year's degree in 1956. Gopi played a drama 'njan oru adhikappattu' Theater presented by students in connection with the Labor Camp in Dhanuvachapuram School.

After passing the BSc degree from University College, Trivandrum, Gopi entered in Clark in the Kerala Electricity Board.

On his travel to Thiruvananthapuram, he met with G Sankara Pillai. This relation led to a new theater group called Prasadhana Little Theatre'. The 'Prasadhana' started in 1960 and continued till 1973.

Gopi is introduced by Adoor Gopalakrishnan in the film industry. Though he was not interested in film acting, he played a minor role in the Swayamvaram of  Adoor.

In 1975 he acted as a hero in Adoor's Kodiyettam. He was awarded the Bharat Award for best actor in India. He won the State Award for best actor in 1978, 82, 83 and 85 years. In 1985,and he won a special award for Best Actor at the Asia Pacific Conference in Tokyo. Gopi is also seen in Hindi films like "Akhat" and "Sadak S Utha Aadmi". Gopi suffered a stroke in 1986 when he stood high in his acting career. After a stroke, he returned from film industry for several years and returned to acting through the film Patheyam.

On January 24, 2008, Gopi was admitted to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram after he suffered a heart attack at the set of the film 'De Ingot Nokiye'.  Five days later on January 29, 2008, the great actor succumbed to death. Then he was 71 years old. The body was buried at the Thaicaud Santhikavadam with full official honors.
